Personally feel that there are enough closed ranged classes and counterpart characters to some classes eg. Ninja/Kunoichi, Witch/Wizard, Ranger/Archer, Musa/MaeHwa, Mystic/Striker.
Firstly, I think maybe it's time for BDO to relook at gender locking as a whole. I'm pretty sure most of the community would agree that they have a specific class they would like to play as another gender.
Secondly, why does some character give clear signs of "I'M ASIAN" and "PROBABLY WHITE". Not nitpicking on it but just suggesting that would be great if there was certain presets that excudes a race to it and allow players, themselves, to choose what in-game-race they are, Eg. Shai, Human, Something-.
Thirdly, I really do think it is time that a character wielding a gun has came out (I'm trying to get a friend to play with me, help me out guys). We all know the standard shuriken/kunais, magic, slash and hack, arrow to the knee stuff. If BDO can come up with hunting, with a MATCHLOCK & HUNTING RIFLE, why not, a GUN WEILDING CHARACTER?
These are suggested weapons that could be considered for a gunner of sorts.
Main Weapon : Shotgun, Rifle, Or just a Bayonet.
Sub Weapon : Pistols (Of sorts)
Awakening Weapon : Cannon, maybe? Magically powered laser beam?
Matchlocks and Hunting Rifles are primitive firearms though. I don't think a high-magazine semi-automatic weapon would mesh well with the world and theme of Black Desert.
And concerning the classes looking like specific races, that's because the different cities of Black Desert are inspired by different cultures. This is VERY noticeable once you reach Port Ratt.
The reason why races and genders are locked for each class is because of the narrative each class has. If you read the lore of each character you'll find that the story treats each class as if they are ONE UNIQUE CHARACTER. Classes are considered characters in Black Desert, not a title given to someone who mastered a specific weapon like Ragnarok and other MMOs.
Male/Female counterparts are an old concept in Black Desert, one I think they are going away from as indicated by the releases of Lahn, Shai and the newly announced "Guardian" (I don't agree in her being a female berserker, she has an Axe and Shield). to provide more class variety.
Pretty sure Guardian's home is in Ody'litta since her clothes just screams "Lady in the harsh winter". And if her backstory is anything to go by, Guardian might have a dragon-related awakening weapon.
It would be nice to have a gunslinger class.
I would prefer if they kept it within the lore of BDO. i.e. Flintlocks (pistols), matchlocks (rifles). or if they will upgrade these to better weaponry, something that is steampunk inspired rather than modern day weaponry.
I could see a character with several flintlocks + matchlocks, much like how ninjas has what? 6? swords?. Use them in chains and have skills that instant reloads them to accomodate the fast paced bdo combat.
we see a lot of industrialization from calpheon, along with airships and what not - it wouldn't be far off to see them with better flintlocks/matchlocks again; to accomodate the fast paced combat of BDO.
Awakening, we already have zerkers being augemented by the dwarvs using ancient technology.
Laserbeams - not really my thing, but i would see how they can fit lasers in as an awakening as you can see attacks that are laserlike from ruin guardians/hsytria etc. Assuming that the dwarvs make another invention for the new class player or the dwarves themselves ARE the new class.
I think succession would be more ideal for a gunslinger class to augement his/her flintlock and matchlock attacks, and a non-awakening branch like Shai for utility (I'm thinking something along the lines as a former hunter from behr, you got x,y,z perks to help the group)
As it is there is barely any group classes, i think this would be a nice addition.
@Jarette, You mentioned a one-handed axe. Does this mean they share the same weapon as the Berserker Class? I need to know cause if so then I can start upgrading a Kzarka Axe.
I'd love a character that can summon spirits to fight for you. Similar to Tamer, but tamer can only summon 1 familiar. A ranged magic user.
yeah, i agree with all of you. i think BDO is a great game with many potentials. nice graphic, complex life skill, nice combat etc etc... i have concern about the lore of the game itself. why don't make some nice background story of each class or u can group the class with the same back story like witch and wizard, mystic and striker, etc and they have their own personal story quest (well maybe it's too late to say this now) so people won't boring to play each of the class. because many players complain about the same content again and again lol if the new class arrived. because using the "flexible customize feature" as advertisement won't hold people too long to playing this game human is a dynamic being so it is normal.
also maybe PA can add some new feature during raid. with new interesting mechanics maybe i can say GW2 as the reference (sorry i am new with this MMO stuff because i just bought decent laptop to play this game so not many repertoire of the games) since the game itself has many potential like the geopgraphy, mechanics, and etc. (after reading again sorry this maybe a bit out of context)
well about the class i am sure every big company has long-term plan just like smartphone companies we can say that the guardian is the counterpart of berserker, and maybe witch and tamer counterpart will come too later. but yeah if you think why is the female char is more than the male char i think it is all about the advertisement again how the company attract the player (and yeah it is male player lol sorry for the female player i don't intended too discrimination or what)
and lastly we can say that this game is still young in comparison with other MMO like WoW, GW, etc. and this is from korean company that has some kind "format" i think in designing the char, and other feature you can see in other korean games like (LA 2, Blade & Soul, etc). yeah because not only for the player like us outside of korean as they also see the majority of korean player about their "taste" but i am not the CEO or the decison maker of PA so i don't know what exactly their thinking. but yeah all of us know PA just launched new games like Crimson Desert maybe that game one can become the "remedy" for some of people. but it is a pity if this game cannot bring out the optimum quality since, like i said before this game has many potential to be great games.
this is 100% purely my opnion so i can't help for anykind biased perspective. cheersss!!
Lorewise, BDO has long established that their gender-locked classes are based on the background story of each classes. Mystic having been trained in the Eastern Kingdoms and by a Water Dragon whilst the Striker was a street brawler who was then blessed by the powers of the Echo Spirits. Likewise with Wizards and Witches, they don't have much of their differnces before their Awakening which for me is the key figure to their Background story as well. Same goes with the Ninja and Kunoichi & Musa and Maewha. In my perspective, BDO chose the path of gender-locking their classes to showcase the difference between such classes, not because of their gender but because of their skills and the capabilities of the player, the gender part there just adds to the thrill of competitiveness for the players. If you've noticed that all classes with gender counterparts have the same Pre-Awakening skills, to showcase their similarities, whilst their Awakening kit showcases their differences because in reality Male and Female are pretty much different from each other, BDO chose that path to showcase such differences without the context of which is actually stronger. We live in a world that is pre dominated with men and women are still being seen as the weaker gender but in this game, that is not the case because in this game, Every player has someone that is stronger than them. In this game, you actually have the power to showcase your strength, and that is where the player takes its rightful place as player.
Now on the race perspective, as what the previous replies said, these classes are not considered as classes but characters that are part of the game. And as what characters should have as its basic information are its background story, and its literal identity as a character which for me includes its race and gender. Players wouldn't find it pleasing to the eyes to see a Male Lahn flying around the map with Nimbus Stride. So much so, BDO already have its unique feature of Character Customization that literally challenges the players' creativity to actually replace that racial boundary of the class, its just so happens that these classes need an identity for themselves thus the race and gender. I have recently just created a Guardian class and I NEVER liked how WHITE she is and so I browsed to the Beauty gallery and was actually amazed upon seeing such an open and vast platform for creativity ranging from Nordic features to actual Celebrities inspired looks like Lupita Nyong'o and that's how you know that BDO dont discriminate.
So regarding that suggestion of havin to choose which race and class you wanted to keep? Thats hardly possible if you take into consideration each classes' lore and impact to the game itself. I dont mean to discriminate but I would find it weird to see a Giant playing flute and throwing around a florang and casting heals to its party members, likewise it will be too cartoon-ish seeing a Shai with an Iron buster because the player decided to play someone that was small yet deadly.
I personally do not like the gender/class locking system in this game, because it just compells players to create as many characters as possible, and in the grand scheme of things, ultimately milking players. It's a design choice influenced by monetisation tactic, and it's one of the many MMO sins that should never exist in the first place. You can tell me that "the game's lore is this", and "the game's lore is that", but when we look at FFXIV (Final Fantasy 14) as an example, you can actually play as any given race, and play as any classes that you want, even switching to whatever class you want on the go as long as you're not in battle or in dungeon instances. I however do see the concern of characters being too weird, ie: Giant playing flute, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing either. From this perspective, take WoW as an example, you have classes that are exclusive to certain races, and I think BDO should learn from that. This game is not that old for a change, and I trust the engine is able to handle a lot of these changes. It's only a matter of design choice being influenced by monetisation.
It's a korean MMO after all, and Korean MMOs are made for short term profit, not long term. Overall, keep your expectations low.
